I'm so confused, they are talking about a Mazda 2, but you should buy the Fiesta, only to trade it for a Sonic. But the Mazda 2 is how to make a good looking hatch, but you don't even trade in the sonic to get it?

The joke was the post said the Mazda 2 is how you make a good looking hatch. Top commenter here said Step 1: Buy a Fiesta. He was implying that the Fiesta was better looking.

I replied to him saying Step 2: Trade that Fiesta in for a Sonic, because I think we all know the Sonic is better looking.

I have a rental Sonic this week. It has half the mileage of the Yaris I had last time and there's a horrific pulse in the drivetrain at slow speeds. At any speed with moderate load on the engine between 2500-3500 rpm the dashboard starts vibrating and making a very odd rattle.

At least it gets better mileage than the Yaris, even if it is a POS... Anything beats the Kia Soul I had in Cali though. 13k miles and the balljoints/tie rod ends were shot. Every bump and the wheel jerked back and forth. It never tracked straight, it was slow, and none of the power ports worked (probably a fuse issue, but still, wtf?)

Sounds like a problem with that sonic. May be low mileage, but it's a rental so it probably hasn't been taken care of. Is it a turbo?

No turbo. It's likely just because it's a rental. It's kind of hilarious how terrible the automatic transmission is in this thing. I roll off the gas and it's smooth, but I roll back into it and it takes forever to do anything, then bang, the tq converter locks up and the engine rattle around on its mounts and I not so smoothly accelerate again.

Reinforcing my hatred of automatics one day at a time...

Sometimes I wonder if car makers should give higher spec models to rental companies at a massive discount.

Someone could end up with a Sonic rental like yours and just assume all of them are terrible when really it's just a super cheap model.

Orrrr.... The rental car companies could maintain them properly. I hate Hertz, BTW. My company travel policy is nothing smaller than a midsize car and they keep shafting me with these little cars because they refuse to do free upgrades when they run out of midsize. I was also using Hertz when I had the trashed Soul.

National is much nicer, and I have had proper vehicles. I had a last gen Chrysler 200 and was pleasantly surprised. Didn't have much roadholding capabilities, but it wasn't a bad car in any obvious way.

Oh, and the Sonic has the crappiest signal reception of any car I've ever driven. Worse than my GTI when I forgot to plug the antenna into the headunit... It won't pick up any of the decent stations in the Columbia river gorge, and the satellite radio reception is hilariously bad. The 200 never once lost signal, the Sonic lost signal every 5 seconds in the gorge, and it loses signal passing under trees driving around the town where I'm at at the moment.

I don't have problems with the radio in the Sonic, but then again I live in Wichita Kansas, so there's nothing to get in the way

When it's got signal, it sounds pretty good.

Is there an upgraded radio model in the higher end Sonics, or do they all use the same?

I think everything other than the base LS has the MyLink touchscreen model

Ah. My rental has a pretty bleh radio, certainly not a fancy touchscreen.
